The LLRC
The LLRC, which initially looked like a kangaroo court, actually turned out to be pretty good. After their recommendations looked like they’d be turned to mulch, however, it looks like they’re actually implementing them. If you’re unfamiliar, the LLRC is the Lessons Learnt And Reconciliation Commission. They documented the collapse of the cease-fire and final war and issued a set of recommendations. Now you can actually see that some of the recommendations are being carried out. For example, someone came to my door and asked if any of our family was killed or disappeared in 1983.
Now, I find it a bit difficult to imagine that someone burnt out of their home in 1983 using voter rolls would easily volunteer this information to another guy with a clipboard (in this case census), but it’s a start. There’s even a website documenting the process.
There’s also a Presidential Commission to investigate disappearances accepting reports till the end of the year. It has received 9,143 complaints so far. Some of the other things the government is supposed to do (according to the LLRC report) is investigate and punish abuses by the military, create a list of detainees, investigate the Channel 4 allegations, review high security zones with a view towards returning land, etc. Some bigger things are phasing out civilian use of security forces (seems unlikely) and ensuring general law and order.
For me the biggest thing is that someone rang my doorbell. That times a lot is something.
